The #1 Rule Of A Best Friend? They Will Hate Your Ex For You.by Chiara Atik on March 28, 2020
This week's Modern Love column from the NY Times deals with the topic of best friends, exes, and revenge. Because, little known fact: breakups will show you who your friends are.
In college I went through a terrible breakup, and my friends were there for me, throughout my most ridiculous histrionics. (Let's just say, cookies with broken hearts drawn in icing were involved.)
At one point, it was discovered that my ex's new girlfriend went to the same college as one of my friend's BFF from home, Abby.
"Do you want me to make Abby find her and run up to her and tell her she's a horrible boyfriend stealer?" my friend asked me, earnestly.
Did I? Of course I did. That's all I daydreamed about. In the end it was fear of giving in to psychotic impulses rather than morals that made me decline the offer.
Anyway, in the years that have passed, I've forgotten the sting of that breakup, but I've never forgotten the loyalty of my friend. The idea of her being unquestioningly on my side.
If you have time this morning, definitely take 5 minutes to read this essay. Sometimes it takes the end of a relationship to show you how wonderful the other relationships in your life are.
