How Much Do You Drink On A Date?by Chiara Atik on June 30, 2020
For many of us, the idea of sober dating is somewhat daunting — sure, it works if you do an activity-based date in the afternoon. But sitting across from someone at dinner and making conversation without the social lubricant that is alcohol? Tough — not impossible! — but tough.
Yet there’s another side to that coin too, which is drinking too much. Marie Claire’s dating blogger Rich Santos warns against this in “Dating Advice From Men:”
“Getting too tipsy on a date is a turnoff. Some people turn into a completely different person when they are drunk. Let the other person learn about you while you’re sober, before you get wasted with them. Alcohol should be introduced into the relationship slowly, but if a drink or two takes the edge off, and wine adds romance it’s fine. Just don’t push it too far.”
Sometimes people will be so nervous about a date that they’ll throw back two drinks before their date even arrives. Obviously being fall-down-drunk is a turn-off, but so are the lesser effects of alcohol: sloppiness, loudness, droopiness.
This is why Patti Stanger (of the Millionaire Matchmaker) strictly enforces a 2-drink rule for first dates: you still get your social lubricant, but you’ve got to make it last.
This assures that not only are you seen in the best light, but you also don’t make any choices — about your date, or about your night — that you wouldn’t make sober.
When you go out on a date, do you find yourself drinking more than two drinks? Or do you seem to follow Patti’s rule? Let us know!
