"Do I Need To Get An iPhone To Date These Days?"

Got an interesting dating quandry via GChat this afternoon from my friend, Asher, 25, who lives in Brooklyn.

Okay, well, first things first: I (a straight girl) have never dated anyone for or because of their cellphone. In fact, I'm pretty sure I would be able to talk myself into thinking that any phone of a guy I'm seeing is superior to other models. ("He has a flip phone because he just doesn't care about technology...he's too deep.")

If I see a guy whip out an iPhone, I smile approvingly, because I, too, have an iPhone and this man obviously has similar taste. I feel confident that he appreciates everything that I appreciate in the phone: its speed, efficiency, design, and capability for Fruit Ninja. What's more, the iPhone is an internet machine: I use mine to blog, tweet, check in on Foursquare, and take pictures. If he uses his iPhone for the same things, chances are we have a somewhat similar lifestyle.

Blackberries, on the other hand, seem to be the phone of choice for professionals. It's an email machine that lets you communicate quickly and efficiently, whether it's sending a file to your boss or sending gossip via BBM. A guy with a Blackberry probably uses his phone for very different reasons than I use mine, but this doesn't mean a blackberry is a turn-off. If I was that diehard of a mac fan, I'd be blogging for Cupidtino instead of HowHookup.

I asked Asher if a girl had ever reacted negatively to his phone.

Okay, so maybe, over the course of first date conversation, an iPhone might provide more interesting fodder than a Blackberry. But you don't have to whip out your phone at all. While iPhone apps might trump Blackberry apps, but they certainly don't trump good conversation or charisma.

And ultimately, buying an iPhone won't change your dating life any more than buying a sportscar would: it might start a few more conversations, but if you're looking for something more than superficial, stick to your guns, and your blackberry.

What do you guys think? Does phone type matter?

[One exception: the iPhone does have (yes, get ready for a shameless plug) the HowHookup app, which will let you find date ideas, message site users, and set up dates while on the go. Blackberry users are are forced to rely on a more sedentary style of online dating, which means they can only do it when they're at home, on the computer, and thus need to have a certain amount of time blocked out. So in this sense, yes, an iPhone certainly can help you get dates.]

(And though this post is completely unrelated to today's sad news, I'd be remiss not to point out that if this isn't proof of how Steve Jobs completely permeated every aspect of the way we live, then I don't know what is.)
